An Endwell man’s plan to develop housing and commercial space in the former Crowley Foods plant on Binghamton’s South Side is getting a boost from New York state.
Jon Korchynsky wants to convert the abandoned dairy processing plant on Conklin Avenue into 48 market-rate apartments.
Korchynsky acquired the site from Mountain Fresh Dairy in January for $800,000.
The city of Binghamton will receive $2 million in funding under the Restore New York initiative to support the Crowley Lofts complex.
Speaking outside the old Crowley milk facility Tuesday, Mayor Jared Kraham said the total cost of the redevelopment project is expected to be between $10 million and $12 million. He said the one- and two-bedroom apartments would be marketed mainly to young professionals.
The mayor said the project will transform a “vacant and blighted eyesore into new housing opportunities.” He noted the building near the Rockbottom Dam will offer “beautiful views of the Susquehanna River.”
Environmental remediation work at the site is expected to start soon. Korchynsky said he expects construction will start in “a month or two.” The project should be completed within two years.
Korchynsky said the commercial space in the building will be on the ground floor. The apartments will be on the second and third floors.
Korchynsky suggested a restaurant or a microbrewing establishment could be developed in the complex.
