Firefighters were called back to the remains of a self-storage facility in Byfleet on Monday (May 22) after smoke was seen emerging from the building, which burnt down last Friday (May 19). An investigation has now been launched to find the cause of the fire and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has suggested a need for the building to be demolished.
Firefighters remained at the Access Self Storage site for nearly three days and were finally able to leave on Sunday (May 21). However, reports of smoke on Monday saw fire crews and police return to the area.
A spokesperson for SFRS said on Monday afternoon (May 22): “Following reports of further smoke issuing from the building, two fire engines and one aerial ladder platform vehicle are now in attendance. There may be a need for local road closures.”

They later added: “The scene is under control but we anticipate smoke may continue to issue until demolition procedures can be carried out.” The service continued on Tuesday (May 23) that investigations are ongoing at the scene.
Surrey Police closed a number of roads in the area last night as the fire crews returned, including Oyster Lane and Byfleet Road. A spokesperson said: “Road closures have been put in place around the scene of the fire in Byfleet from last week due to smoke emerging from the building.”
Access Self Storage – the company in charge of the building – released a statement the day after the fire broke out in which it described the structure as “dangerous”. The statement added: “We do not know when, if at all, it will be possible for customers to gain access.”
Access Self Storage has been approached for an update on the situation. Customers who had possessions in units at the facility have been told to contact the company by email at [email protected].
