A man who allegedly stole from numerous cars in Geelong’s CBD is also accused of pilfering charity money from McDonald’s.
Mark Allwood, 42, of no fixed address, was refused bail in the Geelong Magistrates Court for his alleged offending in the city’s CBD.
Mr Allwood has been charged with dishonesty offences, burglary, obtaining property by deception, theft, and possession of drugs.
Police prosecutor Emma Morse said Mr Allwood allegedly smashed the window of a car in Little Ryrie St about 4pm on March 30 and stole a laptop and other items valued at $2000.
At 5.20pm the same day, Mr Allwood allegedly smashed the window of another vehicle and stole a wallet, bank cards, $120 cash and sunglasses. Police allege he then used the cards to buy items worth $200.
At 6.20pm that same night, Mr Allwood was looking through multiple vehicles in the CBD and when he was called out by a member of the public he turned and faced the man with a screwdriver, it was alleged.
On March 31, Mr Allwood entered a garage in Isabella St, Geelong West and stole a bike worth $700, the court was told.
And on May 3, at 2.30am, Mr Allwood allegedly used a brick to smash the front glass panel of a Macdonald’s outlet and stole money from a charity tin, causing $800 damage.
Mr Allwood was arrested on May 22, after causing a disturbance at a Salvation Army site. When he was arrested police allegedly found him with numerous prescription drugs – three bottles of Methadone, 27 tablets of Alepam and 31 tablets of Paxam.
Ms Morse said Mr Allwood was “highly drug affected” when he was arrested and was unable to be interviewed.
Police conducted inquiries at the pharmacy where the bottles had been dispensed, which confirmed Mr Allwood had no prescriptions for the medications, the court heard.
Ms Morse said Mr Allwood was also a suspect in relation to further offending and the theft of motor vehicles.
Mr Allwood represented himself in court, however, magistrate Michelle Hodgson said she was not confident he had the capacity or willingness to comply with court orders. He was remanded in custody until June 21.
