Yeppoon Police reported five attempted break-ins over the past week and the good news is not all were successful as residents begin to take on board the necessity to lock their homes and vehicles.
Yeppoon Police Senior Sergeant Nev Zrkovick said on the evening of 16 May a property in Melbourne Street and another in Guy Street Yeppoon both experienced attempted break-ins where the would-be offenders were unable to gain access.
“On 20 May offenders gained unauthorized access to a property in Samson Street, found vehicle keys and proceeded to steal a vehicle,” Snr Sgt Zrkovick said.
“On this occasion two offenders were apprehended. One male aged 19 and one male aged 18, both from Rockhampton were charged with the offences and appeared in Rockhampton Magistrates Court.
“On the evening of 20 May there was another incident at a different Melbourne Street address where unauthorized access to the premises was gained and vehicle keys removed.
“On the same night offenders tried to gain access to another property at Tabone Street but were disturbed by the property owners and fled from the scene.
“If you do witness an offence, for your own safety, please do not approach offenders yourself, contact Police and let us do our job.”
Snr Sgt Zrkovick said while some people are getting the message, other residents still need to be reminded to ensure your home, businesses and vehicles are secured and valuables are kept out of plain sight,” he said.
“Now might be a good time to consider looking at your old locks and upgrading to more secure deadlocks on external doors and garages as a deterrent to opportunistic offenders.
“We would also like to see people key locking screen doors as a further deterrent to keep unauthorized people out.”
