GLADSTONE — The Escanaba Eskymos faced off against the Gladstone Braves in a tennis match Wednesday.
The Eskymos were a dominant force that proved to be too much for the Braves, taking the match 8-0. The Eskymos were in charge from the start to finish. In the number one singles match Dawson Williams of Escanaba rolled to two impressive 6-0 sets over Teagan Reynolds. Williams has been in a groove as of late and is very tough for any opponent to defeat.
“I felt good out there my backhand was strong, I feel good about my overall performance,” Williams said.
“I played a decent match today. While I’m disappointed that we couldn’t walk away with the win, I know this is a learning experience for the entire team, and we are improving everyday,” Reynolds said.
In the number two singles match Escanaba’s Sam Rivera defeated Brant Vesser with two 6-0 sets.
“I did better than I usually do, was in a good rhythm today it all felt good ,” Rivera said.
It has been a year of learning and coming together as a team for the Braves. “I’m really glad I get to see my team improve every time we play, especially on the little things I know that they have been working on. I think the best part of tennis is that i get to improve myself, and I get to hang out with my friends while I do,” Vesser said.
In the three singles match Escanaba’s Matt Dykema defeated Landon Fee in two sets 6-1 and 6-4. “It felt good to be out there, looking forward to the Kingsford tournament this weekend,” Dykema said.
The number four singles match had Escanaba’s Julian Cashen defeating Drake Johnson 6-1 and 6-0 in two sets.
The number one doubles match had Escanaba’s Evan St. Peter and Villads Osterdahl defeating Thomas Tackman and Nick Matthews 6-2 and 6-3 in two sets. “Felt good with my serves and forehand, but my backhand was what was lacking. Nick did a great job being aggressive at the net. We didn’t get a win, but we had warm weather though so I’m happy. Seems like our team is headed in the right direction,” Tackman said.
In the number two doubles match Escanaba’s Vincent Guindon and Nick Chaillier defeated Marcus Racine and Max Williams 6-1 In two sets. ” Felt really good we were doing a good job out there playing well as a team,” Guindon said.
The number three doubles match had Escanaba’s Connor Howes and Reid Brazeau defeated Gideon Barron and Grady Nelson 6-4 and 6-3 in what was the most competitive match of the day.
The number four doubles match had Escanaba’s Andrew Lord and David Romps defeating Matthew Hagebusch and Tyler Soderman 6-1 and 6-4 in two sets. “My performance today was better than my last few meets Although, there is plenty of room for improvements throughout the season,” Hagebusch said.
“We did well overall today, we have a big tournament coming up this weekend we have to be ready,” said Escanaba coach Tom Penegor.
“These guys have been working so hard on their game. I tell them to pick one thing to improve on each day. We are pretty green but they are learning fast.We have a great group of guys that are very coachable,” said Gladstone coach Ryan Barron.
