•Gatlinburg, Tennessee-based Sugarlands Distilling Co. announced the latest addition to its moonshine portfolio: Sour Blue Raspberry. The new flavor is made in partnership with Folds of Honor, a national nonprofit organization that provides scholarships to spouses and children of military service members and first responders, with 5% of proceeds from Blue Raspberry going to the organization. Sour Blue Raspberry is at 20% abv and is currently available at Sugarlands’ Gatlinburg distillery and will be available soon at retailers across the country.
•Papa’s Pilar, the rum brand inspired by author Ernest Hemingway, has launched Rye-Finished Rum, the fourth core expression from the brand. The 43% abv rum begins life as Papa’s Pilar Dark Rum, a solera aged blend of rums from Barbados, Dominican Republic, Panama, Venezuela, and Florida, which is then finished in first-fill rye barrels. Papa’s Pilar Rye-Finished Rum is now available across the U.S. for a suggested price of $50 a bottle. Papa’s Pilar is handled in the U.S. by Shaw-Ross International.
•Spoetzl Brewery, maker of Shiner Bock, has expanded into spirits, adding a new distillery at the company’s Shiner, Texas facility. The K. Spoetzl Distilling Company uses a copper pot still and copper rectifying columns sourced from Scotland and will begin by producing three spirits: Shiner Gin, Shiner Vodka, and Shiner ‘Shine. Shiner Gin is bottled at 43% abv and is made using juniper, Rio Valley grapefruit peel, and other locally sourced botanicals. Shiner Vodka is at 40% abv and is distilled 20 times from the same malts used to make Shiner Bock. Shiner ‘Shine is bottled at 45% abv and made from a mash of corn, rye, and malted barley. The new line of spirits will be available for sale at the Spoetzl Brewery beginning Memorial Day weekend, with the company adding that aged spirits will be available in the future.
•Graton, California-based Redwood Empire Whiskey releasing a second allocation of its cask strength whiskey line-up. That line-up includes three undiluted and unfiltered expressions of the brand’s existing offerings: Cask Strength Pipe Dream Bourbon (58.4% abv), Cask Strength Emerald Giant Rye (58.2% abv), and Cask Strength Lost Monarch Whiskey Blend (58.6% abv). All three are priced at $70 a 750-ml. and are available at select retailers nationwide. Redwood Empire was founded in 2015.
