WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — The Cariboo Fire Centre (CFC) is still mopping up what was left from a lightning storm through the region Thursday (May 18) afternoon.
Since then, the CFC reported 23 new wildfire starts, with 16 of them still active. The largest being the near 396-hectare Emerald Lake wildfire to the west of 100 Mile House.
While the CFC saw increased fire activity on the southeast corner of the Emerald Lake wildfire Saturday, Jessica Mack, CFC fire information officer, says wildfire crews do have control lines along the northern flanks of the fire. On Sunday, crews were working to connect control lines on the southern flank.
“We don’t have any structures or infrastructure that are threatened,” Mack says. “On the western flank of the fire, there are some transmission lines we’ve been monitoring very closely. We are anticipating some thunderstorms to go through the Cariboo Fire Centre today which will likely result in some increased winds. We will be monitoring very closely as it may cause an increase in fire activity.”
