Brandon Smith has admitted that he’s going through the ‘lowest point of his career’ amid his terrible start to life as a Rooster.
After a strong six years with Melbourne Storm, the Kiwi forward moved to New South Wales in a stacked Roosters team, but has failed to live up to the hype with injuries and poor form stunting his progress.
He now faces an eight-week spell on the sidelines due to a broken thumb, in another blow to the Roosters after Victor Radley copped a three-match ban for headbutting Blake Lawrie.
And Smith was frank in his assessment of his opening 12 weeks in Sydney.
‘It’s not looking too good, I have to get surgery,’ Smith told News Corp of the injury he suffered against the Dragons on Friday.
‘It’s roughly eight weeks, according to our physios. It’s a tough pill to swallow. I’m gutted.
‘I look at it as a massive opportunity for myself. I’m not where I want to be at and I’ve got six to eight weeks just focusing on myself.
‘I’ll go through a plan of how I can use this to really better myself and hopefully the Roosters are in finals contention when I get back.’
Smith’s best position at the Roosters has been widely discussed. He was signed as a dummy-half but started from the interchange bench for his side’s defeat by the Dragons.
‘This is definitely the lowest I’ve felt in my whole six years,’ he added.
‘Not mentally. I’m still happy and all that. But just physically, I’ve been injured a lot and not performing.
‘We get paid to perform, that’s our job.
‘When I was at Melbourne, we didn’t have so many penalties and so many errors. We were the frontrunners, most times, but now we’re on the back foot and we have to learn to fight.’
