WHAT WE’RE LOOKING AT
- Port Adelaide have won six straight games.
- Melbourne has won and covered the line in three straight against Port Adelaide.
- Melbourne have a 4-2 record at Adelaide Oval across the last three seasons.
THE MATCH-UP
It’s 2nd versus 4th on the ladder as a pair of 7-2 teams clash as Melbourne travel to take on Port Adelaide in a massive Friday night at Adelaide Oval after both took care of cellar-dwellers last week.
Port are riding high, having won six on the trot after last week’s handling of North, while Melbourne have taken full advantage of a soft part of their schedule to win four in a row after the Gather Round loss to Essendon with wins over Richmond, North, Gold Coast and Hawthorn.
The Demons will also be buoyed by the fact they’ve won and covered the line in the last matchups against Port by 32, 31 and 14-point margins, including beating them twice last year.
Melbourne is also the top ranked offensive team in the AFL at 106.9 points a game, while only surrendering 74.4: good for third best in the comp. Port are scoring the fifth-most points a game at 92.3 points, while giving up 82.3 (8th).
Still, with those numbers being boosted on the back of a couple of soft schedules, it’s worth noting that the last nine games between the two have gone under the total points line.
POWER TO KEEP ON WINNING?
Port have been exceptional in this win streak, boasting wins over finals contenders like Essendon, St Kilda and the Bulldogs, with plenty of coming down to their midfield brigade of Zak Butters, Connor Rozee, Travis Boak and Ollie Wines.
Butters has gone for 25+ touches six straight games after last week’s singularly excellent 32 disposal, 12 score-involvement outing and is proving one of the comp’s premier users of the pill.
His mate Rozee had 25 last week and has also ripped off 26+ disposals in all of the last four Port four home games.
TOUGH TO BATTLE THESE MIDFIELD DEMONS
Melbourne dismantled Hawthorn last week with the midfield duo of Clayton Oliver (34 disposals) and Christian Petracca (30 touches and 12 score involvements) doing plenty of damage among their other leading lights like Ed Langdon, Jack Viney and the double-headed ruck monster of Max Gawn and Brodie Grundy.
With Petracca nursing a tweaked ankle, it will fall to Oliver to deliver the Dees a big road win. Clarry averages 31 touches at the Adelaide Oval, has gone for 31+ in eight of his last nine there and will be looked at to dictate this game.
Even with that bum ankle, Petracca is still a bull too: he’s gone for 26+ touches in seven straight games now.
BEST PORT ADELAIDE vs MELBOURNE PLAYER BET
Bayley Fritsch has been a little off the boil – his 35 straight games with at least a goal was snapped two weeks ago – and he only managed two against the Hawks last week.
But the elegantly-haired one has 18 goals in 10 games at Adelaide Oval, and has also gone for 2+ goals in a ridiculous TEN straight Friday night games for the Demons
THE PICK
Port’s form is tough to go past, but Melbourne’s recent record against them – winning the last three and covering the line in each – is too hard to ignore.
Melbourne have a size and class that will be just too much for the Power.
— POWERS DEMONS SAME GAME MULTI —
- Alex Neal-Bullen – anytime goal
The Bank of ANB is open: he’s kicked a goal in nine of his last 10 (just missing last week).
- Travis Boak – anytime goal
Boak has slotted a major in three straight for the Power.
- Ollie Wines – 20+ disposals
Wines has had ups and down this season but has 25+ in four of his last five against the Dees.
- Dan Houston – 20+ disposals
Houston has no problem getting the ball: he’s gone for 20+ in five straight.
- Lachie Hunter – 20+ disposals
Lachie has hunted down 20+ in seven of the last eight for the Dees.
