A NUMBER of appeals by Mayo land owners unhappy with Residential Zoned Land Tax (RZLT) designations have been submitted to An Bord Pleanála.
The designations have caused concern especially among farmers whose properties have been included in the tax, which aims to free up land for development and comes into effect next year.
Farmers/landowners who are unhappy with their local council’s determination on the draft maps were given an opportunity to appeal decisions free of charge to An Bord Pleanála.
Weekly appeals lists published by An Bord Pleanála show appeals have been submitted by a number of landowners in larger towns around the county.
They include lands at Castleconnor, Nally Street, Bohernasup and Teeling Street in Ballina, Bilberry Hill, Claremount and Convent Road in Claremorris, Rathkelly, Ballinrobe, and Main Street and Station Road, Castlebar.
The lists indicated that the board is due to issue decisions on the cases before the end of August.
The new tax has caused anxiety among the farming community.
One local elected representative, Councillor Tom Connolly, has tabled a motion asking Mayo County Council to call on the Minister for Finance to introduce the necessary change to ensure that land actively used for agricultural purposes is excluded from the RZLT.
