New London — New London completed quite the turnaround on Wednesday.
The Whalers, who started the season 0-8, qualified for the Class L state tournament with a 13-8 victory over Windham in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II game at Sal Amanti Field.
New London, which finished division play 6-2, is now 8-10 overall with nonleague games remaining against Old Lyme and Plainfield.
The Whalers took care of business quickly against Windham, scoring seven runs in the first inning.
Derrel Mitchell led New London’s offensive barrage with three hits, including two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored, while Isaiah Plaza had a double, triple and three runs, Eddie Torres had two hits and two runs and Jorge Rodriguez had a two-run double.
Jack Valliere had a double and triple with two RBI for Windham.
In other games:
• Connor Doyle and Ayden Kempesta each went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI to highlight Norwich Free Academy’s 10-6 win over Old Saybrook. Daniel St. George struck out eight over 6.2 innings to earn the win for the Wildcats (9-10) while St. George, Connor Caulfield and Jonas Tiburcio each doubled.
• Michael Fabiano drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give Killingly a 2-1 win over Wheeler. Kyle Kessler had two hits for the Lions (11-5), including a double.
• Cheney Tech scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Grasso Tech 6-4 in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Tito Arias had two hits for the Eagles (10-9), including a two-run inside-the-park homer in the fourth.
Boys’ golf
• East Lyme wrapped up the ECC Division I championship with a 4.5-2.5 win over NFA at Norwich Golf Club. The Vikings (13-2, 6-0) also beat Valley Regional 7-0 while the Wildcats (9-4, 4-2) beat Valley 6-1. East Lyme’s Tyler Moore shot a 42 to earn medalist honors while Sebby DeCosta also won his match against NFA. NFA’s Max Weston and the Vikings’ Jack Buck each shot 43 to halve their match while the Wildcats also picked up wins from John Howd and Cooper Kilpatrick against East Lyme.
• Wheeler clinched the ECC Division IV title with a 7-0 victory over Putnam. Keiran Boscoe and Cameron Conway each shot 40 to share medalist honors for the Lions (11-1, 5-0), while Gavin Arruda, Tyler Signor and Brady Sadowski also won their matches.
• Plainfield’s Colin Wiliams was the medalist with a 40, but the Panthers lost to Griswold 5-2. Cooper Wilson (team low 43), Owen Pappas and Evan Merchant won for the Wolverines (5-3-1).
• NFA won the medal point 184-186 and edged Woodstock 4-3 in an ECC Division I match on Tuesday. Costa Kapilotis (44) and Max Weston (45) won matches for the Wildcats (8-3, 4-1).
Girls’ golf
• Hand edged East Lyme 229-232 in a nonleague match. Mary Haburay led the Vikings with a 55.
Boys’ volleyball
• NFA rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Wethersfield 23-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-22 and 15-11. Edwin Santana Hernandez had eight kills, three blocks, two digs and one ace for the Wildcats (13-6) while Gage Hinkley had nine kills, five blocks, three digs and one ace and Paul Ericson had 16 assists, nine digs, three kills and one block.
Girls’ lacrosse
• Williams School advanced to the Housatonic Valley Athletic League tournament final with a 15-11 semifinal win over Harvey. The Blues (6-8) will play at Wooster in Saturday’s title game. Ally Iacobellis had seven goals for Williams while Lucy Fader added five goals and two assists, Skyler Forster had two goals and two assists and goalie Phoebe Taylor made 11 saves.
Boys’ lacrosse
• Ethan LoVetere’s four goals and one assist helped Bacon Academy defeat Ledyard/Griswold 17-2 in an ECC Division II game on Tuesday. Jameson Pirro also scored four goals for the Bobcats (9-6, 6-3) while Jack Holmes and Avatar Disher had two goals and one assist apice, Ethan Foley scored twice and Gavin Emmons had a goal and two assists. Brian Johnson and Liam Gervais scored goals for the Colonels (0-15, 0-8).
• Brendan Li had three goals and three assists to lead Williams School to a 10-5 win over Forman in the semifinals of the Housatonic Valley Athletic League tournament on Tuesday. Tyler Gagliardi added four goals for the Blues (9-3), who will play at Harvey School on Thursday in the title game. Marc Macera added two goals for Williams while Ben Xenelis and Cody DeLaurentis each had two assists and eight ground balls, Baker Katko scored a goal, Henry Champagne had two assists and goalie Henry Gallagher made 14 saves.
