2023 WIAA state boys golf tournament: Rob Hernandez’s Division 1 regional preview, predictions | WIAA Boys

Wisconsin.Golf’s Rob Hernandez analyzes the WIAA Division 1 boys regional golf tournaments being played across the state this week. The top four teams in each regional advance to next week’s sectionals, along with the top four golfers not on those teams. The state tournament is June 5-6 at Blackwolf Run in Kohler.

MARSHFIELD SECTIONAL

Eau Claire Memorial regional

When: 9 a.m. Tuesday. Where: Wild Ridge GC-Eau Claire.

2022 story: Sophomore Will Schlitz earned medalist honors with an even-par 72 and joined three other Eau Claire Memorial teammates in the the top five as the Old Abes began their march toward a WIAA Division 1 state championship with a regional victory at Troy Burne Golf Club in Hudson. Senior Cole Fischer (second) shot 73, junior Ben Christenson (T-3) a 74 and junior Parker Etzel (T-5) a 75 as Memorial shot 294 and joined Hudson (316), River Falls (317) and New Richmond (321) in advancing to the sectional. It took a score of 84 or better to move on individually.

2023 skinny: Defending state champion Eau Claire Memorial won its third Big Rivers Conference championship in a row, but Hudson and River Falls made sure the Old Abes never felt too comfortable and that figures to continue through the WIAA tournament series. Juniors Tyler DeBruyckere and Thomas Cole have filled graduation losses for Memorial, which returns two top-10 finishers from last year’s state tournament in Schlitz, the 2022 Division 1 state champion, and Etzel, who finished T-7. Hudson sophomore Sam Swavely, who missed qualifying for the state tournament by one shot, and River Falls senior Matthew Marsollek, a UW-Parkside recruit who took the last of three state berths at last year’s sectional ahead of Swavely, have helped their teams keep the heat on the Old Abes. The best battle of the day might be the one for the fourth sectional berth between Eau Claire North and New Richmond, which split their eight Big Rivers Conference meetings.

Rhinelander regional

When: 9 a.m. Tuesday. Where: Northwood GC-Rhinelander.

2022 story: Senior Kaeden Nomm (72) and sophomore Matt Haggart (81) finished 1-2 as Lakeland (Minocqua) — coming off back-to-back state runner-up finishes in Division 2 — made its Division 1 debut a successful one as the Thunderbirds shot 322 at RiverEdge GC in Marshfield and defeated Rhinelander (346) for the regional team championship. Wausau West (353) and Stevens Point (361) also advanced to the sectional as a team. Ted Schlindwein (84) and Cooper Bjerke (89), a pair of Wausau East freshmen, were the bookends of the four individual sectional qualifiers.

2023 skinny: For the first time since 2016, there won’t be a Nomm in the Lakeland lineup to start a WIAA postseason. However, the Thunderbirds have a strong 1-2 punch in juniors Jack Rubo and Matt Haggart, the only holdovers from the Thunderbirds team that placed fourth at the state tournament a year ago, and they won the third leg of the Great Northern Conference tournament series played at Northwood GC, site of the regional. Lakeland will no doubt keep an eye on Wausau East, which lost the first two legs of the Wisconsin Valley Conference tournament series only to win the last five and edge Marshfield for its first conference title since 2009. Marshfield and Stevens Point will have to play well to hold off host Rhinelander for the final two sectional berths, although the Hodags did not play well on their home course at the GNC Tournament leg it hosted May 8, two days after the course opened for the season.

NOTRE DAME (GREEN BAY) SECTIONAL

Notre Dame (Green Bay) regional

When: 9 a.m. Tuesday. Where: Northbrook CC-Luxemburg.

2022 story: Senior Ryan Darling, a Minnesota State-Mankato recruit, shot 71 to earn medalist honors by five strokes as Notre Dame shot 317 and topped Ashwaubenon (328) to win its own regional at Thornberry Creek at Oneida. All five Tritons golfers, three of them freshmen making their WIAA tournament series debut, finished in the top 10. Shawano (345) and Pulaski (347) also earned sectional berths while golfers who shot 88 or better not on those teams (three of them from Bay Port) qualified for the sectional individually.

2023 skinny: De Pere, which won what is now the Appleton West regional a year ago, moves over to the Notre Dame regional after the Redbirds and host Tritons took turns applying pressure to Fox River Classic Conference champion Sheboygan North throughout the regular season and enter the postseason after stellar showings at the conference championship. Sophomore Ethan LeCaptain shot 76 to help Notre Dame shoot 313 at Wander Springs GC in Greenleaf and finish second to North (311) while De Pere (314) was another shot back behind Jack Weisenberger (76), who is the only senior in the top five for either of the two teams. Bay Port and Pulaski should have no problem securing the final two team berths to the Notre Dame sectional at Thornberry Creek at Oneida.

Projected sectional individual qualifiers: Austin Soli, Green Bay Preble; Luke Guenther, Shawano; Gaven Averbeck, Ashwaubenon; Luke Cisneroz, Green Bay Preble.

Appleton West regional

When: 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Where: Winagamie GC-Neenah.

2022 story: Sophomore Evan Harmann shot even-par 72 at Ledgeview GC in De Pere and led four teammates in the top seven as the Redbirds shot 302 and topped West De Pere (314) to win their own regional. Kimberly (327) and Appleton North (333) also qualified teams to the sectional level. It took a score of 86 or beter to advance to the sectional individually.

2023 skinny: With De Pere moved to the Notre Dame (Green Bay) regional, the door is wide open for Kimberly to continue to build off the momentum of earning a share of its first Fox Valley Association championship. The Papermakers have a state championship contender in junior Aiden Cudney, who finished T-10 at the state tournament a year ago, and should be hungry after finishing second to Fond du Lac at the FVA Championship at Chaska GC in Greenville. Appleton North, which shot 324 and finished third at the FVA Championship, has a solid 1-2 combination in Rasmus Madsen, who finished third at the state tournament a year ago, and Drew Rudolf and should win the battle for the second sectional berth. Beyond that, there are as many as five teams capable of getting through the regional, including West De Pere, which shared the Bay Conference Championship title with Division 2 power Xavier (Appleton).

WAUNAKEE SECTIONAL

Onalaska regional

When: 9 a.m. Monday. Where: Trempealeau Mountain GC-Trempealeau.

2022 story: Sophomore Luke Taebel shot 80 and shared medalist honors with Onalaska senior Thomas Breit as Holmen shot 333 and edged Breit’s Hilltoppers (339) for the regional title. Tomah (349) and Baraboo (351) took the other two sectional team berths ahead of Wisconsin Rapids (357). It took a score of 89 or better to advance to the sectional individually.

2023 skinny: Holmen should feel right at home returning to Trempealeau Mountain for the regional after shooting a 299 there last week to win the Mississippi Valley Conference by 21 strokes over runner-up Tomah. The Vikings had four golfers break 80 led by conference champion Luke Taebel, whose 70 was good for a four-stroke victory over Ethan Kramer of third-place Onalaska. Wisconsin Rapids returns to this regional for the third year in a row after finishing third in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. It will be important for teams emerging from this regional to build confidence and momentum heading into next week’s Waunakee’s sectional where they will likely run into three schools ranked in the top eight of the latest Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin Division 1 state rankings. 

Projected sectional team qualifiers: Holmen, Onalaska, Tomah, Wisconsin Rapids.

Projected sectional individual qualifiers: Ty Poker, Baraboo; Maddox Herlitzke, La Crosse Logan/Central; Brock Connelly, Sparta; Zach Weis, La Crosse Logan/Central.

Madison Memorial regional

When: 9 a.m. Monday. Where: Blackhawk CC-Madison.

2022 story: Sophomore Dain Johnson shot 71 and senior Alec Sosnowski 72 as Middleton (296) won a shootout over Waunakee (300), Madison Memorial (303) and Verona (310) at Odana Hills GC in Madison to win the Madison West regional and lead the four teams to the sectional. It took a score of 82 or better for golfers to advance individually.

2023 skinny: At the end of the day, this loaded Madison Memorial regional is just a qualifier for the main event at the sectional at the Meadows of Sixmile Creek, where Waunakee will host. But just try telling that to newly minted Eight Conference champion Madison Memorial and Badger East Conference champion Waunakee. They continue to be ranked behind No. 3 Middleton in the GCAW Division 1 state rankings — Memorial is fifth, Waunakee eighth — despite the Cardinals finishing third at the Big Eight Championship. That’s why the next two weeks will be filled with intrigue, if not immense pressure. Middleton and Memorial, which finished sixth and T-7 at the 2022 Division 1 state championship, will be looking to get back to Blackwolf Run in Kohler and bettering those showings while Waunakee is itching to get there for just the second time in program history (and first time since 2017). Memorial has one of the hottest golfers in the state in senior Charlie Erlandson, who shot 70 at Evansville GC at last week’s Big Eight Championship to win by five strokes. He has recorded eight scores between 70 and 72 since the start of May. Middleton’s Dain Johnson and Waunakee’s KC Nickel figure to join the battle for medalist honors.

PLYMOUTH SECTIONAL

Hartford regional

When: 9 a.m. Tuesday. Where: Washington County GC-Hartford.

2022 story: Hartford packed all five of its golfers in the top 10, led by junior Kreston Selsing’s 84 and not counting a score higher than 86, in shooting a 340 and winning a tight, three-team race over Plymouth (343) and Slinger (345) for the Plymouth regional team title at Quit-Qui-Oc GC in Elkhart Lake. West Bend West topped Port Washington 20-24 in a team playoff for the last of the four sectional berths. Plymouth junior Brady Bleck earned medalist honors with an 82, one stroke ahead of Slinger sophomore Zach Greenhill. It took a score of 92 or better to get through the regional individually.

2023 skinny: Pick a storyline, any storyline. Hartford’s return to home cooking coming off a grueling test at the North Shore Conference Championship. Fond du Lac’s momentum coming off a win at the Fox Valley Association Championship. Hamilton (Sussex) winning the battle for second place in the Greater Metro Conference behind Marquette (Milwaukee). Fond du Lac and Hamilton moving into this regional after Fondy finished third in what is this year the Homestead regional and Hamilton winning what is this year the Nicolet regional. How the three favorites build off experiences from where they’ve come figures to determine which of them come out on top. Slinger, which finished fourth (one spot behind Hartford) at last week’s North Shore Championship, and Neenah, which finished fifth at the FVA Championship, have similar depth and should wage a nip-and-tuck battle for the fourth sectional berth.

Projected sectional individual qualifiers: Christian Geffers, Oshkosh North; Julian Gallmeier, Neenah; Sam Coulthard, Neenah; Kevin Lynch, Oshkosh North.

Homestead (Mequon) regional

When: 9 a.m. Tuesday. Where: Mee Kwon GC-Mequon.

2022 story: Junior Max Schmidtke shot 78 to finish second to Neenah senior Payton Kraemer (73) and help Sheboygan North (325) escape with a narrow victory over Neenah (331) and Fond du Lac (332). Manitowoc took the fourth sectional team berth on a day in which individuals who shot 90 or better advanced to the sectional.

2023 skinny: A pair of conference champions figure to compete for the regional team title as host Homestead (Mequon) squares off with Sheboygan North. Homestead, which finished T-7 at the Division 1 state tournament a year ago, edged Cedarburg by three strokes on the Irish Course at Whistling Straits in Haven to win the North Shore Conference Championship; North — T-4 at state in 2022 — edged Notre Dame (Green Bay) by two strokes at Wander Springs GC in Greenleaf to win the Fox River Classic Championship. Marquette University recruit Mason Schmidtke of North, the 2022 Division 1 state runner-up, won the FRCC Championship while Homestead’s Hunter Thibert, which finished T-35 at state a year ago, won the North Shore. Four teams are in the running for the final two berths.

MILTON SECTIONAL

Oregon regional

When: 9 a.m. Tuesday. Where: Legend at Bergamont GC-Oregon.

2022 story: DeForest’s all-freshman starting lineup made its WIAA postseason debut one to remember as Camden Goninen shot 78 and Kaden Zinkle and Lincoln Hottmann shot matching 80s on their home course at Lake Windsor CC to lead the Norskies (322) to a three-shot victory over Badger East Conference rival Monona Grove (325). The runner-up Silver Eagles got a 1-2 finish from seniors Jacob Frederickson (78) and Jordan Hibner (79). Stoughton (333) and Sun Prairie (334) edged Oregon (337) for the final two sectional berths. It took a score of 85 or better to qualify for the sectional individually.

2023 skinny: Sun Prairie’s split into two high schools adds another contender to the six chasing the final three sectional team berths behind DeForest, the third-place team in a loaded Badger East Conference and a heavy favorite to run away with the regional team title. Sun Prairie East, the original of the two high schools, is coming off a T-5 finish in a top-heavy Big Eight Conference and looks to ride a pair of seniors (Tyler Schick and Aidan O’Gara) to a sectional berth. Sun Prairie West is seeded third, two spots ahead of Sun Prairie East, but took eighth at the Big Eight Championship. The Sun Prairie schools will have to contend with Oregon, runner-up to WIAA Division 2 power Edgewood in the Badger West; McFarland, the third-place finisher in the Rock Valley Conference against mostly Division 2 schools; Monona Grove (fifth in the Badger East); and Madison La Follette (ninth in the Big Eight). All can break 350, which might be the magic number on a tough course like the Legend at Bergamont.

Projected sectional team qualifiers: DeForest, Sun Prairie East, Oregon, Monona Grove.

Projected sectional individual qualifiers: Gabriel Roe, Sun Prairie West; Will Arkin, Madison La Follete; Tate Eccles, McFarland; Alex Oehrlein, Sun Prairie West.

Fort Atkinson regional

When: 9 a.m. Tuesday. Where: Koshkonong Mounds CC-Fort Atkinson.

2022 story: Sophomores Easton Haworth and Bryce Sullivan shot identical 78s at Edgewood GC in Big Bend to finish T-5 individually and help Janesville Craig (320) edge Milton (321) for the Mukwonago sectional title. Beloit Memorial (329) and Mukwonago (332) took the two remaining sectional team berths ahead of Janesville Parker and Fort Aktinson, who tied for fifth at 334. Milton sophomore Brett Wieland shot 75 and earned medalist honors by two strokes on a day in which it took a score of 82 or better to make it to the sectional individually.

2023 skinny: Janesville Craig and Milton — two teams that played in the shadow of others most of the regular season — figure to have the spotlight to themselves if they can negotiate the twists and turns of hilly Koshkonong Mounds CC without too much trouble. Craig, runner-up to Madison Memorial in the Big Eight, returns four of the five golfers off a team that finished 10th at the 2022 WIAA Division 1 state tournament. Milton, which missed qualifying for state by three strokes a year ago after making it in 2021, finished second to Waunakee in the Badger East Conference with the kind firepower at the top of the lineup — seniors Xander Wuetrich shot 75 and Deegan Riley 78 around a 77 from junior Brett Wieland, who finished T-14 at state as an individual qualifier a year ago — that it will need to survive a balanced sectional this year. Host Fort Atkinson, which finished a distant fourth in the Badger East, is seeded second in the regional according to the WIAA website despite only six nine-hole scores.

GERMANTOWN SECTIONAL

Waukesha North regional

When: 9 a.m. Wednesday. Where: Naga-Waukee War Memorial GC-Pewaukee.

2022 story: Junior Alex Koenig (71) and sophomore Spencer Stuke (74) finished 1-2 as Kettle Moraine shot 302 at Naga-Waukee GC in Pewaukee to win the Waukesha North regional by 23 strokes over Pewaukee. Waukesha North (329) and Oconomowoc (337) held off Waukesha West (346) for the final two sectional team berths. It took a score of 87 or better to qualify for the sectional individually.

2023 skinny: Kettle Moraine moves to the Westosha Central sectional and Arrowhead (Hartland) moves over from what this year is the Nicolet (Glendale) regional, but could this be the year host Waukesha North ends a 30-year state tournament drought? The North Stars are coming off a runner-up showing to Arrowhead (Hartland) at the Classic 8 Championship on the same Naga-Waukee War Memorial GC that will play host to the regional. Both teams have solid seniors — Arrowhead in Bode King, who finished fourth at the Classic 8 Championship, and North in Peter Hoeppner, who finished T-7 — but Arrowhead got a pair of 73s in its conference championship from senior Harrison Froling, who has WIAA postseason experience, and sophomore Gianpaul Gambatese, the No. 3 golfer who does not. The topsy-turvey nature of the Classic 8 should help Arrowhead, Waukesha North, Oconomowoc and Waukesha West feel comfortable with the inevitable ebb and flow of a regional that has six, if not seven, teams in the mix for sectional berths. Pewaukee comes into the regional after shooting 318 at Washington County GC in Hartford and winning the Woodland Conference title by 34 strokes over Greendale. Menomonee Falls, which finished a strong third in the Greater Metro Conference, looks to ride that momentum into the regional after missing a sectional berth last season by four strokes in a top-heavy Cedarburg regional where it took 314 or better to advance. 

Projected sectional team qualifiers: Waukesha North, Arrowhead (Hartland), Menomonee Falls, Oconomowoc.

Projected sectional individual qualifiers: Carson Hill, Brookfield East; Brad Olinger, Pewaukee; Eli Woelffer, Pewaukee; Charlie Krall, Waukesha West.

Nicolet (Glendale) regional

When: 9 a.m. Tuesday. Where: Brown Deer Park GC-Milwaukee.

2022 story: Senior Michael Addie shot 72 at Mee Kwon Park GC in Mequon to share medalist honors with Germantown senior Camden Schmidt as Hamilton (303) won a shootout over Germantown (307) and Arrowhead (308) for the Cedarburg regional team title. Homestead (314) edged Menomonee Falls (318) for the fourth sectional team berth. It took a score of 80 or better to reach the sectional individually.

2023 skinny: With Hamilton and Homestead moving over to the Plymouth sectional and Arrowhead (Hartland) sliding to the Waukesha North regional in this Germantown sectional, the door is open for Cedarburg — the runner-up to Homestead at the North Shore Conference Championship on the Irish Course at Whistling Straits — to battle Germantown for a regional team title. The Bulldogs graduated two seniors off last year’s team, which finished sixth in a loaded regional that it hosted at Mee Kwon Park. Germantown, which graduated three seniors off its regional runner-up team of a year ago, finished fourth in the Greater Metro Conference and should be a lock to reach the sectional as does Wauwatosa East/West, which finished seventh in the Greater Metro. It could be a tight chase between Wisconsin Lutheran and host Nicolet (Glendale) for the final team berth. The Milwaukee City Conference, which hasn’t sent a team to the state tournament since 1967, has the No. 6 seed in Milwaukee King, which has a nine-hole average six shots behind Wisconsin Lutheran and Nicolet.

WESTOSHA CENTRAL SECTIONAL

Waterford regional

When: 9 a.m. Tuesday. Where: Rivermoor CC-Waterford.

2022 story: In what amounted to an elimination game at the Racine St. Catherine’s regional, Union Grove (327), Muskego (329), Waterford (332) and Racine Case (339) advanced to the sectional while two golfers from Burlington, the only other school with a full team in the field, and one each from Racine Horlick and Racine Park qualified individually. It took a score of 93 or better to do so.

2023 skinny: The WIAA’s reconfiguration of tournament assignments in southeast Wisconsin has restored this regional’s seven teams with full, five-player squads (Milwaukee Ronald Regan does not have any entries listed on the WIAA website). Westosha Central and Waterford, which finished 1-2 at last week’s Southern Lakes Conference Championship, figure to do so again here on Waterford’s home course, although Muskego — sixth out of eight teams at the Classic 8 Conference Championship — could have something to say about that. Greendale, runner-up to Pewaukee in the Woodland Conference, will battle Wilmot, Burlington and Badger (Lake Geneva) for the final spot.

Projected sectional team qualifiers: Muskego, Waterford, Westosha Central, Greendale.

Projected sectional individual qualifiers: Charlie Huerth, Badger (Lake Geneva); Mason Meier, Burlington; Adam Cole, Wilmot; Jimmy Kirschlager, Badger (Lake Geneva).

Mukwonago regional

When: 8 a.m. Wednesday. Where: Edgewood GC-Big Bend.

2022 story: Senior Charlie Bennett shot 78 to earn a share of medalist honors as Brookfield East (322) topped host Brookfield Central (338) to win the regional team title. Greendale (350) and Greenfield (359) also advanced teams to the sectional. It took a score of 91 or better to move on individually.

2023 skinny: There is a whole new look to this side of the Westosha Central sectional as Kettle Moraine, the 2021 state champion and 2022 state runner-up, comes in from what this year is the Germantown sectional and Mukwonago joins from what this year is the Milton sectional. Both teams should make it to the sectional along with perennial power Brookfield Central and West Allis Hale, which finished last in the eight-team Greater Metro Conference. Neither Milwaukee Hamilton nor Waukesha South have any golfers listed on the regional entries page on the WIAA website.

MARQUETTE (MILWAUKEE) SECTIONAL

Franklin regional

When: 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Where: Muskego Lakes CC-Muskego.

2022 story: A host of incomplete entries from teams assigned to the Wauwatosa East/West regional reduced it to a mere exhibition. Marquette (Milwaukee) won it with a 288 at Brown Deer Park GC in Milwaukee while Wauwatosa East/West (329) and Wisconsin Lutheran (425) advanced to the sectional by default from a regional that left one of its team qualifying spots unfilled. Two golfers from Milwaukee King and two from Saint Francis advanced individually with scores between 100 and 117. A disqualification eliminated the only other golfer in the field.

2023 skinny: The good news is five teams have entered full teams for this regional based on information posted to the WIAA website. The bad news is only three of them submitted a regular-season resume with 10 or more rounds. Marquette (Milwaukee), ranked fourth in the latest GCAW state rankings, will again coast into the sectional while Franklin (the 2022 Kenosha Tremper regional champion) and Oak Creek, which finished 1-2 in the Southeast Conference, should follow. Whitefish Bay of the North Shore Conference looks to have an edge on South Milwaukee from the Woodland Conference in the chase for the final team berth, leaving four of South Milwaukee’s five golfers to take the individual berths.

Projected sectional team qualifiers: Marquette (Milwaukee), Franklin, Oak Creek, Whitefish Bay.

Racine St. Catherine’s regional

2022 story: Junior Zach Koch (78) and sophomore Landen Savage (80) led the way as Franklin shot 322 and topped Southeast Conference rival Oak Creek (329) for the Kenosha Tremper regional title. Westosha Central (336) and Kenosha Indian Trail (356) grabbed the remaining two sectional team berths on a day when a score of 90 or better earned individual qualifiers a berth in the sectional.

2023 skinny: Low numbers among several schools in the Southeast Conference have reduced this to a five-team affair in which Union Grove, Kenosha Indian Trail, Kenosha Tremper and Racine Case should advance teams to the sectional with ease. The remaining individual spots would appear to be guaranteed for the top four scores from Kenosha Bradford/Reuther based on the entry list posted to the WIAA website, which reflects the awkward situation of host Racine St. Catherine’s — in the middle of a rebuilding process — not having any golfers entered in its own regional for the second year in a row.
