Actress/singer Judy Holliday had an all-too-brief time as a featured big-screen star — roughly a decade from the late 1940s to 1960 — before her untimely passing from breast cancer in 1965 just two weeks before her 44th birthday. During this time, she only starred in eight films in which she had significant roles, but she made the most of these appearances — in nearly all of those, she was nominated for and/or won an award. Five of those titles are airing on Turner Classic Movies tonight, beginning with perhaps her most famous movie: Born Yesterday (1950). Directed by George Cukor, the comedy/drama earned Holliday the Oscar for Best Actress. Following that is The Solid Gold Cadillac (1956), featuring Holliday in a Golden Globe-nominated performance. Holliday earned a BAFTA Award nomination for the next film, Phffft (1954), which costars Jack Lemmon. Next, Holliday stars with Richard Conte in the comedy/drama Full of Life (1956). The evening then concludes with what was the actress’ final film appearance: Vincente Minnelli’s romantic comedy/musical Bells Are Ringing (1960), in which Holliday received another Golden Globe nod in her performance alongside Dean Martin.

Beach Blanket Bingo
TCM, 8pm
Catch a Classic!
This fun 1965 film is the fifth, and possibly best remembered, entry in American International Pictures’ (AIP) famous series of teen-focused ’60s party films that were usually set at the beach (though one spinoff title was set at a ski resort). As a number of these movies famously were, this one is led by Frankie Avalon (in his last starring role in a beach film) and Annette Funicello. The plot is silly, of course, and frankly unimportant; the movie effectively delivers to viewers the same thing that is of principal importance to its characters — an “endless summer,” just-hanging-out party kind of a vibe. Beyond Frankie and Annette, the rest of the cast includes an interesting range of actors, notably Linda Evans in one of her first feature films; Don Rickles; Paul Lynde; Harvey Lembeck; Deborah Walley, who would also appear in a few more of AIP’s beach films; Marta Kristen; and even silent filmmaking legend Buster Keaton, who would also make a cameo in AIP’s How to Stuff a Wild Bikini later in ’65.

Svengoolie Classic Horror & Sci-Fi Movie: “Curse of the Demon”
MeTV, 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Originally titled Night of the Demon in its British release, this 1957 supernatural/psychological thriller was helmed by Jacques Tourneur, a director who was a master at creating the type of moody, atmospheric horror that is on display here in one of his finest works. Based on M.R. James’ short story “Casting the Runes,” the film stars Dana Andrews as an American psychologist who travels to England to investigate a satanic cult suspected in some deaths. The doctor’s skepticism about the existence of supernatural evil is put to the test when he finds himself targeted by a curse put upon him by the cult’s leader (a terrific Niall MacGinnis). Although a special effects-created demon was forcibly inserted into a few shots against Tourneur’s wishes, it doesn’t detract too much from the intensifying horror that viewers feel, along with the hero, as he races to stop the curse before its deadline arrives.
