Here are the top stories in Roswell today:
- A $6 million void that was needed to revitalize the 199 Grove Way apartments is expected to be met, according to the Roswell Housing Authority. The total cost to redevelop the property and increase the current 40-unit community to a 102-unit site, will be approximately $30 million. The housing authority is looking for a low-income housing tax credit application that is estimated to provide about $17.92 million in funding. The board must also raise $6 million in financing from other groups, in order to secure credit. At an April 11 council meeting, a commitment of $2 million in grants was made to the project. Fulton County is also expected to give $2.1 million towards the new Groveway Apartment development. (Appen Media)
- On Monday, May 15 the community met at the Roswell Adult Recreation Center to discuss the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Grimes Bridge Road Project. The transportation department’s plans to create express lanes along Georgia 400 were discussed and many residents are not happy about the project. βWeβre going to be stuck with a lot of traffic, itβs not fair to us,β resident Marissa Pereira said. The City of Roswell presented a series of design plans to help alleviate the inevitable traffic increase the area will experience. Some of the options include roundabouts and turn lanes. Jason Yowell is the only member of the Roswell Transportation Advisory Committee, as the remainder of the board resigned last week. He stated that βthis project is so horrendously designed.β The city council received feedback and opinions from citizens that they will take into consideration. (Atlanta News First)
- Reasons behind the sudden resignation from almost the entire Roswell Transportation Advisory Commission are being shared with the public. The members expressed frustration after an information meeting about the Grimes Bridge Road corridor improvement project. They were dissatisfied with not just specifically the Grimes Bridge Road endeavor, but with the cityβs ongoing transportation projects in general. They also felt that city officials were ignoring their recommendations. One of those who resigned was Commissioner Marisa Pereira; she wrote a letter to the City Council on May 11, and noted that “in more than a year on the panel, member recommendations and motions have never been acknowledged.” As of now, Jason Yowell, is the only member of the commission and plans to stay on to make sure his voice is heard.
